Adoption Awareness Month

Years ago I used to blog on the topic of state adoption. I used to keep up with the latest statistics, resources. and laws. The past couple years, since the finalization of the adoption of our 3rd child, I've forgotten much of what I used to know and haven't kept up much on new laws. That's because I've been able to just step back and be a mom!

I first became curious about fostering and state adoptions from my old boss who was adopting her nephew. She shared with me the heart wrenching reality of the thousands of waiting children in the U.S. and the desperate need for good foster and adoptive families. I went home and talked with my husband about fostering and possibly being open to adoption. I was shocked he was so open. We then began the journey of trainings, background checks and a home study.

Our first son was placed as a legally freed adoption. This meant his birth parents no longer had parental rights. I wish I could say it was a quick process but it wasn't. From the time we started our orientation to the time he was placed, it was 19 months. Some families get placements more quickly, some wait longer. He came to us as a young toddler, just over a year old with these amazing big bright blue eyes. I missed so many firsts, however, 7 days after his placement we witnessed his first steps.

Our second son came to us as a foster placement at 5 months. His former foster mom was wanting to retire from fostering and Oregon's Department of Human Services (DHS) was concerned he would not be returned to his birth mother. Because of this, it was important to place him in a foster home who may be open to adoption, lest he have to be moved yet again. After praying, we felt a peace that we were the family to take that risk and love him as long as we could have him. This wasn't easy. Balancing loving your child unconditionally and guarding your heart in case you lose them is hard! But he was worth it. He is now ours.

Years passed and we were notified of siblings to our boys who were born. Some were adopted by a wonderful foster mom, and others went to live with another adoptive family who had other birth siblings.

One day we got notice of another sibling born. She was/is fully biologically related to our oldest son and therefore was placed as a kinship adoptive placement. We were notified right after she was born and asked if we would initially foster her until she was officially deemed adoptable--and this case would without doubt be going to adoption. Our daughter had more significant special needs than our boys had and her future was very uncertain. Still, there was an undeniable peace to move forward.

I've spent about 11 years co-facilitating support groups and advocating for children and their families both in local settings and online. The past few years I just haven't had the time I used to. With 3 kids, my school and my Etsy shops, I've stayed pretty busy.

Each one of our children are considered "special needs". Each had a rough start in life. I'm happy to say, in spite of this, they are healthy, amazing, lovable and loving children. My husband and I got to be the ones to witness them grow and thrive. As I've shared many, many times with others: I consider it a humbling honor to be entrusted with my children. I believe children are given to us by God, whether it be by birth or adoption, for a time and are a gift to be cherished. It isn't easy; I don't know anyone who has found parenting easy.

Oregon Sunstone Mining

Family vacation 2011 we decided to venture through Oregon's outback to mine beautiful Oregon Sunstone; an all natural labradorite feldspar sometimes containing beautiful copper shiller. It can be clear, yellow, with reds, or even greens .

We loaded up the RV, made sure we were topped off on gasoline, water, food, and our holding tanks were empty. I had no idea how important this would be.

Coming from the more densely populated part of Oregon (our city neighbors Portland), I had no idea just how empty parts of our state were. We were on probably 30 miles of dirt road before we reached Dust Devil Mine past Plush, Oregon. (I think it took Bryan a couple hours to wash all the dust off our RV once our trip was over.) Living in an area of vast greenery, I found the golden scenery beautiful and serene. Nothing but sage, hills and blue skies--oh yeah, and dirt!

We arrived and were greeted by the mine owners who instructed us in how to find sunstone rough. Shame on me, I should have used the sunscreen. I only lasted about an hour mining with my husband, my 2 boys ages 7 and 10 and my 3 year old daughter. Thankfully I was the only one who ended up with sunburn. My husband Bryan and I dug the dirt and sifted through material and found the sunstone fairly easily. Our younger son didn't even lift a shovel and found more pieces of better quality than we did.

When we were finished, we brought our material back to be inspected for quality pieces we'd then have the option of buying. We got to keep everything we found because nothing Bryan or I mined was of any real value.

I'd never enjoyed a shower so much after that dusty day. I enjoyed walking around the desert with my kids picking up pebbles here and there. Maybe they weren't worth much but the experience was priceless.

That night I heard my oldest son yell, "look at all the stars!". Never in my life have I seen so many stars. While my youngest slept, the remaining four of us went outside the RV and just looked in wonder at the beautiful night sky. My boys saw their first shooting stars that night.

After our visit to the Dust Devil mine, we went south to Davis Creek, California to collect obsidian, a natural glass. From there we went to Sparks and Virginia City, Nevada before heading home. Our 6 day adventure came to an end.

During the trip I was able to make some great faceted sunstone purchases from the Dust Devil mine which I'll be setting into jewelry and selling in my shop soon. I hope to visit the area of Plush, Oregon again soon.

A Little Color

Upon completion of a drawing, I consider whether a picture's appeal will be enhanced by color or if the adding color will become a negative distraction. I've ruined many good drawings by coloring them in the past. Now I scan the piece before I add color this way I can create prints, if nothing else, out of the black and white drawing should I be unhappy with the painted version.

Adding color can really bring a piece to life. The colors I choose often reflect the mood I'm in. For this reason I often give it a day before painting.

Above is an example, before and after, of one of my drawings. I don't always draw out my pieces first--only if I think I'll like it more as a black and white piece. More often I outline and detail after I paint.

Family Dinner Revival

A while back I would have been completely embarrassed to share our family dinner routine--mainly because we had no routine; or structure. With such picky eaters (much of it due to my own lack of discipline), my husband and I found ourselves making separate dinners for each of our children. He and I wouldn't eat together until the kids were in bed where we could eat in peace without the "eww" and "I don't like that".

I have a magnet on my refrigerator that says, "Everyday I give my family two choices for dinner...take it or leave it." I've intended to live up to this, but it's rarely happened. I have always envied families who have sit down dinners, where everyone eats and passes the side dishes around the table. I admit, I hate cooking with a passion! In order to balance the need for family dinners together and the kids actually eating we eat out quite a bit at "sit down" restaurants.

I'm excited to say I've found a solution! It's only been 1 week but I'm blown away at the results. Curious yet? Okay, here it is; we have a family of 5. Two days a week, Fridays and Saturdays, we've committed to eating out still for tradition's sake, and because those days we're often away from the home at dinner time. For Sunday through Thursday each of us have drawn days out of a jar. Those are our permanent days we are each responsible for preparing dinner for the family--yes, even our 2 year old daughter with help from Mommy and Daddy!

When it's our day to cook, we get to choose what everyone eats. We lead prayer, and we set the table. We each bus our own dishes afterward. This is what has happened as a result:

The children get excited to create what they want knowing (within reason) everyone will eat it or at least try it, no rude comments allowed.
They learn cooking skills.
They also learn to be sympathetic toward those making meals they may not like and try them anyway knowing a lot of work and preparation went into it. After all, they wouldn't like it if someone complained about the meal they carefully planned and made with love.
The children have gained such pride and self confidence as they watch their family eat what they've prepared.
My husband and I kind of get a break from cooking. We still help guide them with their preparations.
We are bonding and creating lasting memories. Today as I was helping my 9 year old make French toast, he offered me a high five with our spatulas as one of his toasts turned out beautiful.

I'm sure there are other benefits of our new dinner routine. Finally, we get to live up to the magnet quote about two choices; taking it or leaving it. My hope is my kids, oral sensory issues and food aversions or not, will learn to appreciate new things and cherish family dinnertime.

The Big "C"

The big "C" I'm talking about is "cancer". Recently another close family member of mine was affected by this disease; my mother-in-law. It seems all too common now days and no doubt cancer can have an impact on the whole family as well as the patient.

My husband and I traveled out of state to be there for his mom while the doctors removed her tumor. As we returned home after a successful surgery, I thought about how wicked cancerous tumors are. I prayed for my mother-in-law's continued recovery and complete healing. I thought about how God can take something so awful like cancer and make something beautiful out of it. I envisioned what His love love could grow in the place of my mother-in-law's cancer: love, perspective, endurance, patience, faith, strength, perseverance, courage, hope and compassion, to name a few. This vision is what inspired the piece to your left.

This exact drawing will go to my mother-in-law but I will be offering prints of it in my shop soon. 50% of the profits will be donated to cancer research centers in hopes of one day finding a cure.

If you know someone who is about to go through chemo therapy and risks losing their hair, I'd like to recommend a shop on Etsy called English Traditions. This seller makes and sells well crafted chemo scarves. She will ship directly to your loved one if need be and thoughtfully wrap the items and include a personal message if you wish to send one. My mother-in-law's package also included a nice poem.

What's New and What's Happening

I can't believe how long it's been since I've written! I promise I've just been busy rather than lazy.

This last week I passed my Colored Stones class with the Gemological Institute of America bringing me a step closer to my gemologist diploma. Since completing this class I've found time to paint and to wire wrap a bit. I look forward to bringing new pieces to each of my shops soon.

I held my anniversary drawing in my jewelry shop but never got around to blogging showing what was being given away. It'll be a surprise to my winner whose raffle ticket was drawn today. Missed this drawing? No worries because there'll be one in my art shop in August.

I plan to add more gems to my gem shop, however, since I'm taking Gem Identification next, I am going to hang onto whatever I can until I'm done with this class.

Gemology Pursuit

Today's challenge is to see how much I can get written with my toddler competing for my attention. It's been difficult to write lately with daily demands of appointments, school, working and full time with my kids, still making time for my husband... but I really want to give an update.

With my latest store sales I've been able to pay for some of my classes to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) "The world's foremost authority in gemology." Recently I received my AJP which stands for Accredited Jewelry Professional. Currently I'm studying Diamonds and Diamond grading with the intent of completing the program to gemologist.

I've been studying gems since I was about 16 years old and as I'm sure I've mentioned before, have built my own gem lab more recently. I've always had a love for fine jewelry especially. While in high school I would save portions of my lunch money to buy jewelry at the local pawn shop. From there I would trade items up as I had money and ended up with a nice collection of gemstone jewelry, much of it in karat gold.

My grandma had a love for jewelry and perhaps influenced my early appreciation for fine pieces. She has since passed on but I'm sure she'd be proud of me pursuing my interests.

Well, it only took me 45 minutes to write this.

Considering a Store Close

I have a passion for jewelry making and design but the reality is, the time it takes to produce my pieces and the cost of my supplies versus the price that moves them through my store leaves me at a financial disadvantage. There are so many jewelry artists out there and in order to compete with others' prices I feel I'm having to sell myself short.

In order to get items noticed among the hundreds of thousands on Etsy I must advertise and/or consistently relist pieces to move them toward the top of the "most recent". Doing this also puts the piece in a brief front page viewing as "recently listed items". This costs money and can add up quickly. So while Etsy's commission is very reasonable, an item, for example that cost me $5 to make that I'm selling for $10 on clearance, I may have to pay several dollars in relisting fees to get it noticed before it actually sells; thus being out time and possibly money. This is not to mention Paypal's fees.

In my jewelry I use sterling and fine silver. If you've followed precious metal prices lately, you'll know they've gone up exponentially. In fact sterling wire prices alone have nearly doubled since I started my Etsy shop just less than 2 years ago. Fine silver in clay form has always been pricey but so far my vendor has kept the prices the same. As a result I've been making more items out of fine silver lately. While the supply cost is not much different, my prices are higher because it takes me 2 days to make these pieces. I've considered doing a tutorial--and perhaps at some point I will. Experiencing the labor that goes into PMC and Art Clay pieces in forming and finishing them, I've come to appreciate other artists' creations in a renewed way.

So, what's happening now in my jewelry shop is I've clearanced out many pieces. I have no official plan should I phase out completely. I'm considering pulling some pieces I've gotten compliments on from family and friends and may save them as gifts and keep some samples of work for my own collection; things I've put a lot of heart into. I will not likely reduce the prices anymore than I have but have a coupon code being offered on my store's front page for additional savings. I also may auction some off on Ebay.

Another shop I'm considering closing is my gem shop. I've got hundreds upon hundreds of loose gems. Listing these take a bit more time because each one is measured weighted and sometimes run through expensive tests before being photographed for entry into the shop. It's a bit much for a $5 gem. I've got a coupon code floating in that shop too.

As for my art shop, I don't have plans to close it down anytime soon. I need some sort of outlet after all. I do, however need to move things along so, that store as well has a coupon code.

I'm not going to close out anything in a haste. I thought posting this might give people a head's up as to what may be coming. If there is something you're interested, please consider purchasing it while it's still there. Last Blog Update for 2010

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and Hanukkah time. Thanks to all my wonderful customers I was able to, not only give my family a decent Christmas, but pay for my first class of school. I've begun my courses at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) to become a gemologist. I've studied gems for more than 15 years and as you may know, I sell them on Etsy as well. I have a complete gem lab and a vast array of rare and exotic gems used for my study so this is right up my alley.

Between caring for my 3 children and my dear husband, and managing all their appointments, I'm finding time to study, paint, make jewelry pieces and manage my shops. I'm not Super Woman so something is going to have to give--and it can't be my kids or husband so it'll be time on my projects. I'll be a bit slower paced on getting pieces made and listed.

I've reduced prices (some drastically) in my art and jewelry shops on most items to clearance out older pieces. New jewelry should be released by next week and I hope to create and list more new paintings sometime this week as I have ideas stewing in my head.

Custom Nursery Paintings

I have two pregnant friends who have babies due at nearly the same time. Both these women are absolutely precious to me so I wanted to do something for their nurseries. Doing so meant I've had to step away from my girly-girl butterflies and ladybugs and try something new. I actually had a great time making these and coming out with new characters. I've made some ACEOs that match both of these themes.

In other news, My EmBoundArt shop is going to be debuting it's new necklaces too. They aren't scrabble tile pendants but a little bigger. I have 1 inch circle and square necklaces. I've been working on these for quite some time. I've considered using this pendant style to do custom art pieces as well as customer's submitted photos. My "goal" is to have these necklaces listed sometime this week. But with 3 kids, and a busy schedule I'm not going to hold myself to that.

This week has been productive. Last night I managed to FINALLY get a bunch of new gems listed. I have morganites, sapphires, tanzanites, alexandrites, zircon, and more. I've got many more items to list but the camera battery died so I'm off the hook for now. I also got quite a few custom paintings done (likely to be reveled in the next blog).

I'm excited to see what new items other Etsy sellers are putting out as the holiday season draws near. If you're a seller, feel free to post your shop and what's new in the comments. I have several projects I've been working on the past couple of weeks in addition to my day to day busyness.

Currently in the midst of making pendants out of portions of my artwork. Feeling crafty yourself? You can purchase downloads of the same images I will soon be creating into magnets and necklaces. The pendants will make great inexpensive stocking-stuffers come the holiday time!

I just got done uploading several new paintings. I'm really enjoying flower themes and ladybugs.

In the next couple weeks I'd really like to begin restocking my gem shop. I have some morganites, sapphires (mellees) and much more I'd like to add.

Lastly, I've made some major discounts in my jewelry shop. I'm really hoping to clearance out some of my pieces before adding any more. I have some custom jobs I'm needing to get started on and hope to do so also within the next couple weeks.

While I'm a stay-at-home-mom and not employed outside my home, I stay extremely busy during my day. I have three wonderful kids, but between therapy, school functions, church and day to day chores, finding time to stay on top of shop updates is not easy.

Campus Crusade For Christ

I would like to begin a habit of featuring a new charitable causes that are dear to my heart. This month I've decided to feature Campus Crusade for Christ.

While I've heard of this group I didn't know too much about it until I reconnected with an old friend Stephanie. I've asked her to share a bit about herself and what she does.

Currently I am part of a team of people in Missoula, Montana who are trying to share about who Jesus is with students on the campus of the University of Montana. Our heart is that every person here would know someone who truly follows Jesus Christ. I believe that every person is on a spiritual journey and my desire is to help them along the way. Treasures From the Sky, Land and Sea

I've got treasures from the sky and the sea listed today so far but am waiting on an order for my moldavite. Moldavite is a tektite made from a meteor impact to the ground turning the sand to glass.

Listed today are some lovely pieces of shells found on my favorite Oregon Coastline and some Sikhote-Alin meteorites. All my meteorites in the past have sold out and I've had a harder time aquiring my supplies at a reasonable price lately. All my Moldavite pieces have sold out too so it will be great to restock my shop with more.

In regard to my shells, this time around I've given them a lacquer finish, not just to protect it but to give it a nice wet look. I love the patterns and colors in these pieces.

New Stuff to Be Listed Soon

New pendants...finally! I've spent the last couple days and managed to wrap up more than a few pendants. Not sure how many I'll end up doing. I'm planning on a show later in August and thought I should add to my inventory.

In this photo I have spectrolite/labradorite, agate, blue chalcedony with apatite, Oregon's Owyee Jasper, and Peruvian Pink Opal. I hope to get at least these listed tomorrow.

Metallic Prints

I just got back some prints I had done in metallic photo paper. These prints are truly amazing but you will have to take my word for it since the coolness will not show up on a computer monitor. Think about the pearly inside of a white plastic candy wrapper or the nacre on a pearl. It has that kind of a luster. The photo paper is glossy too. It really pops with the greens, yellows and blues.

Emma's Garden

Sunday my daughter Emma will be 2! My latest painting, an 11x14", I've named after her. These are some of the colors in her room and I'm now really toying with the idea of doing a bug theme rather than a french-chic. After painting her walls I felt the color purple came out too bright for my initial plan...

Anyway, I've listed my latest painting in my shop. It is listed at $65. It took me 6 hours straight to complete this and the photo doesn't do it justice. Unfortunately my scanner is not large enough to capture a better image of it so I had to rely on my camera which tends to wash out the color. I plan to have this scanned elsewhere so I can retain an image for Emma should I go the bug direction.

I currently have 2 smaller paintings called "Into Summer", parts 1 and 2 in my shop for $10 each. They were the initial paintings that sparked my desire to create something on a bigger scale.

Prints: Their Debut

I just got done stocking my shop up with tons of prints! Some of the prints I'm now selling were never sold as originals in my store. I've gone with the more affordable-for-all option of using the photographic paper for prints rather than the pricier giclees. My prints are on Kodak Professional Endura paper. The Endura paper is made to last up to 200 years if kept in a dark space out of sunlight, and up to 100+ years with typical display! The colors are bright and overall, I'm happy with them. My scanner doesn't tend to grasp the crisp lines and often exagerates color but this can all be seen in most of the first photo images of each painting in my shop. I don't mind this as it makes images more vivid.

How It's Made- Painting Edition

I thought it would be fun to show some of my paintings from start to finish. I don't always paint my work this way. Sometimes I'll do stippling first. Lately, this is how my paintings have come to be. First I start with a sketch. Typically I see the basic idea of what I want before I even pick up my paper.

I really like to use watercolor pencils for more detailed work. Today I began working with a green pencil for the leaves.

Once I've sketched what I want with my water color pencils I begin to paint; fanning color where I want it. I also use watercolor paints as well. Below is what my paintings look like prior to breaking out my markers.

With my archival pens I can bring out the details I want. I prefer using pen because I like how it looks against the paint.

On these paintings I tweaked the colors a bit and removed some color from my roses. I've cut out my paintings and have since named and listed them in my Etsy shop.

All together almost 8 hours went into these. Most of my time is spent detailing my paintings with pen. I paint because I enjoy it and work mostly at night while my children are sleeping. Iam not sure what I'd do with all of them when finished so I've been selling my work in my Etsy shop. I love bright colors and nature. Please check out more paintings of mine in my shop: EmBound Art

African Pietersite

African Pietersite is truly a remarkable stone. I paid a bit more for my Pietersite cabs than some of my others because of their beauty and collectability.

As the authentic form of Pietersite, the African material is the one that tends to yeild the denim blues with the golds. There is a Chinese material, that has been referred to as Pietersite but, in my opinion, it has nothing on the African stuff.

I've had this rare gem in my shop for quite awhile but admittedly my photographs were very poor, not leaving as much to be desired. Recently I went through and tried rephotographing my inventory. There is a fluidity and chatoyancy that just can't be captured with a camera. So for this, you'll just have to take my word. Indulge with Sinami1 Products

I thought I'd share one of my favorite shower rituals with you. This comes from Etsy seller Sinami1's shop. No doubt there are MANY great Etsy sellers of quality bath and beauty products but store owner Silvia is one of my favorites.

I have GOT to recommend her Cranberry Sugar Scrub to you. If you think it looks good, wait until you smell it! It's sure to make your mouth water. It has a very sweet smell to it. I'm guilty of opening the jar just to get a smell. It isn't as soft (squishy) as some of the sugar scrubs out there but you'll find when you break off a bit, and rub it in your hands has a nice lather to it and leaves your skin feeling soft and smelling really nice. Check her listings for ingredients.

After my "cranberry" shower I treat myself to my Cranberry Silk and Satin Body Cream (Lemon-Lime is shown however Silvia can customize a fragrance for you). The body cream is just as nice as the sugar scrubs are and feel like silk on the skin. The body cream, while thick, is not heavy on the skin and will not leave a greasy feel. It absorbs very well leaving your skin smooth and soft.

Currently the sugar scrub can be purchased for $9.50 and the body cream for $14.50 plus shipping and handling. Silvia often offers promotions but even if she doesn't, there's always a free sample to look forward to in your order. Currently Sinami1 is doing a free lip balm with any $10 or more purchase. Her lip balms are great and my favorite is the Juicy Peach.

If you're looking for another great scent, my next very close favorite is the Kumquat.

Packaging with Love

Unlike a lot of online shopping places I've found Etsy sellers tend to take great pride in the presentation of their handmade goods. Whether it's secure packaging, free samples, or added touches like gift wrapping or personal notes, receiving a package in the mail from an Etsy seller often leaves me feeling pretty special. And honestly, I'm more likely to return to a seller if free samples or a gift with purchase is included with an order. I'm a sucker for deals. I want my customers to feel the same custom personal touches when they receive their order as I have.

Each of my handmade jewelry orders are delivered in handmade cloth bags by Ole Bag Lady, another Etsy seller. Inside the bag I like to include a personalized thank you note with the tissue wrapped jewelry. Attached to the tie on each bag is a sterling silver wire formed signature heart. The bag then is wrapped in tissue once more. and placed in a padded envelope. Shipping confirmation is used on each order.

There are a variety of patterns of the bags I use. So the bag in the photo may not be the same bag you'll receive.

NOTE: Remember April is my anniversary month and I have a drawing going on and lots of new items. MANY clearance items too!

Emma and Her Pillow Case Dress

I just love the versatility of these dresses I've seen from photos. Some wear them as I have it on my daughter, or as shirts with jeans, or as a jumper with a long sleeved shirt or turtle neck underneath.

If you'd like to pick up one of these dresses, I was happy with the turn around time from this Etsy store considering it was made after I ordered it. There are quite a few patterns to choose from and the prices are reasonable at $25 (which includes shipping charges).

Please don't judge the dress just by the way it's on my daughter. I literally threw it on her and didn't straighten out the bows or anything. I wanted to keep her new dress clean for Easter.

Ready for Spring?

I sure am! Spring is by far my favorite season and I'm taking advantage of the new leaves on the trees and bushes. I've been super busy capturing nature and creating some unique pieces using precious silver clay (99.9% pure silver) from PMC and Art Clay. I not only have some cool leaves made from the ones in my back yard, but some adorable ID bracelets featuring genuine gems of sapphires and one with an alexandrite set in the middle of a flower, butterfly or dragonfly.

My PMC and Art Clay pieces are all made by hand. They are formed by hand, sanded, "hand" fired, hand burnished, and polished.

Labradorite and Other Colorful Gems

More new pendants are here. This includes some iron meteorites. I love the meteorite metal against the sterling silver. These are great conversation pieces as well as collector's items. These meteorites are Sikhole-Alin found in Russia in 1947 and were a witnessed fall. .

ALS Walk

I'm doing a virtual "walk" for my brother-in-law Scott who has a rapid form of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. This is a wicked debilitating disease causing degeneration of the voluntary muscles.

Symptoms for Scott began in about August of 2008 and is now unable to walk, talk or eat. He in his early 40s. He has a wife (my husband's sister) and two daughters. Scott is not ready to go and neither his family ready to let him go.

Just imagine being imprisoned within yourself not able to move or communicate while having your sound mind and ability to hear. PLEASE help if you can, support the efforts to find a cure and help support families of those going through the pain of caring for a loved one with ALS.

I've set up an account with Fight ALS Walk to help fund raise in honor of my brother-in-law. If you are not able to give financially, please pray for his immediate family especially, in addition to Scott.

A Juggling Act

That's what it's felt like lately between my Etsy shops and taking care of my family. I have so much gemstone inventory I've been obsessed with getting things listed. Those of you who own Etsy shops know keeping a store is more than just making your craft; it takes TIME to list. I finally had to create a stopping point for myself tonight. It's nearly 1:30 in the morning and I suppose I should sleep soon.

I received my painting from Montri at PaintMyLove on Etsy and already have it framed and matted. There are some other paintings of his I'm dreaming of buying. I'm reluctant to share about her store because I want everything for myself (lol).

I still want to find some time to re-design some business cards and some note cards for my store. I'd like to do some shopping too for things to help me become more organized in my stores. I'll have to post a picture sometime of "before and after" pictures of my home "office".

My dear husband has been handling the deliveries of my packages to help me out with time as I've been bombarded with appointments for the kids.

It is all a juggling act but I'm still having fun doing some work between caring for my children.

This store will be for selling loose gems and other supplies I may come up with in the future. Right now my focus is still primarily on my jewelry store www.EmBound.Etsy.com.

My hope with EmBoundGem is to fulfill special requests. Those working with PMC and Art Clay may especially find this store a real treat. I'll be selling a variety of cuts, clarity and overall quality including a section for scratch and dent stones. I have a lot of very rare gems as well that are of good quality.

I am not a Graduate Gemologist, however gems are a passion and hobby of mine. I've been studying gems since I was a teenager. I have a full gem lab in my home and will be happy to answer any questions people have about their gems. I am a gem geek!

Ammolites are Here!

More ammolites will be listed soon and will be UNDER $40! My last ones sold out. These are rare beauties found only in Alberta Canada. Watch for the ammolites to be listed very soon. They are wrapped in solid sterling silver and accented by a lustrous dangling genuine round freshwater pearl. Contact me if you would like a specific one listed sooner for you.

The photo shows only one angle of color. These stones (from ammonite fossils) put many opals to shame, and like fine fiery opals, have a play of color depending on the direction they are viewed in. Ammolites are in their natural form so the surfaces may show inclussions (exclussions) and some pitting or chipping. They are backed with their matrix.

Birthday Listings

I just celebrated my birthday. Is it me or is it normal to forget your exact age after 30? I actually questioned if I was a year older than I was. I had a great day. I had a clean home and my hubby took me out to dinner tonight and got a sitter for the kids. I received my order from Old Navy and everything fit. Wow, that's a first! I was all excited to wear my new teal colored dress. My oldest son who's 8 lost his first 4 bottom teeth today at the dentist. I think that was the highlight of my day.

After a lovely evening I managed to post 12 new paintings. http://emboundart.etsy.com/. I've sort of left my art store to sit while focusing on other things. I've been painting almost every night as I find it so relaxing. I'm waiting for my supplies still so I can begin wire wrapping pendants.

Abstract Thinking

I LOVE the metallic pens I got! I love metals anyway. You can't totally get the cool effect from the scan but these pieces were so much fun to paint and fun to look at in person.

School Time is Here

Now that school is in session I find my days more organized. This means I have better scheduled time for creating. My jewelry store has picked up a tad more too so I know it's not just me feeling more settled and finding time.

This year my oldest entered 3rd grade and my youngest son started Kindergarten. Kindergarten! He is the one in the photo. If I didn't have my 14 mo. old daughter at home, I'd feel old (however she does make me feel old in other ways). I'm glad we were blessed with the opportunity to go through the baby thing one more time--and the newborn thing for the first time!

As shared in my prior blog, I have ammolites on their way. I've continued to paint and draw. I've now limited myself to one painting or project per day. I've been slacking off with my Bible reading at night with projects and watching Discovery Health until 2 a.m. I need to reset my priorities.

Princess Peaches in her Tutu

Just had to share these photos. They were taken a couple days ago after I got my tutu set from Etsy seller EllasMommy06. While my daughter was not too interested in being dolled up right after dinner (hence the messy greasy hair), but I was so eager to see her in it. I'm very happy with the quality of this set for the money! For the tutu, head band (the flower detaches for a plain barrette too), and foofy wand, it was $15 plus $5 shipping. Last night and today I've been listing like a mad woman. Here are a couple of MANY new listings using stippling and watercolor pencils. The painting above took 5 hours to complete, just to give you an idea of the attention it got.

I think the paintings look softer in person which is why I try to include a photo of the piece outside of the scanner. I've been on this bug kick and my husband was happy to see last week when I painted fish. I'd like to attempt some frogs and eventually animals.

My oldest son is so honest. He'll tell me what he thinks looks good and what looks "weird". These got the thumbs up from him and he's asked me not to sell them. Finding My Style

Lately my niche has been using a stippling technique (thousands of tiny dots put together to create an image) to put my visions on paper then, sometimes, painting it. Stippling can also be seen in a couple of my Art Clay silver projects, albeit not much. This has been really hard on my eyes though. I've just got my new glasses prescription and still finding it a strain. I have such shaky hands so drawing alone hasn't been my thing. Anyway, I don't want to get stuck on butterflies and ladybugs forever but for now I'm having fun with it. Fall time will bring new inspiration I'm certain.

Sapphires are Here

Tomorrow is the begining of September, which is the month of my birthday. Sapphire is the birthstone for this month and comes in the most amazing array of colors! I LOVE Sapphires and garnets both because of their varieties.

I've reduced many items in my store. That's great news huh? Well there's a bit more too it and I hope you'll like this idea. Many of my pendants came with 20" sterling silver box chains. Some people would rather have them longer or shorter and while I'm not in a position to accommodate all their requests, I am able to reduce the price so my customers can use the money to get what they want. Trying New Things

If you check my store frequently you've noticed I haven't been listing new items lately. There are a few reasons for this. For one, supplies are pricey and until I make some more sales, I won't be able to bring out many new items. Two, I've been taking my creativity to a new dimension. I've been painting. Using watercolor pencils and a micron pen, I've been having a blast bringing to life new ideas--and old ones.

In my art I'm able to share my faith, my love for my kids, adoption and my love for nature. I hope in the near future to be able to feature some of my paintings/drawings in my blog and share the individual inspiration for them.

Etsy has many talented artists selling on their site. I'm not sure whether I'll be sharing any of my ACEO (art card sized) paintings. I'm so new to the world of painting and this was literally the first time painting since I was taking art in high school! While I'm happy with what I've produced, I'm not sure of the interest others will have in my work .

Below is one I painted. It's a larger version of an ACEO I did. It represents the new life I have in Christ as He touched my heart giving me a new life in Him.

The next I painted for the family room to bring out the colors. Didn't feel it really went with it so it's in the kitchen which connects to the family room.

The last picture is one I painted tonight for my daughter's room. I'm really going to have to do something for my boys' rooms. My 8 year old is a bit tired of Buzz Lightyear.

You might have seen some of my "picture necklaces" (for lack of a better name). Here is one I made for myself showing my three children. I put my oldest son in the middle holding his little brother and little sister's hand. I made them with various heights to reflect their birth order.

The retangular background is made from Art Clay, which you may know by now is 99.9% pure silver once the piece is fired and the binder has burned away. Each piece is stamped ".999FS" for 99.9% Fine Silver on the back.

I use solid sterling silver beads and chains. Why do I specify "solid"? I'm finding many sellers out there are using the word sterling silver in their descriptions only later to state--or not state--reference to the plating of their jewelry. My supplies are purchaced from trusted vendors so my customers can be sure they are purchasing unique pieces which made with quality materials to give them many years of enjoyment.

It's time for me to begin listing once again. These projects were completed last week but due to our family vacation I wasn't able to get them listed. Each of the pieces except for the wire wrapped tri-colored fluorite are made from Art Clay. Art Clay is similar to PMC (a brand standing for Precious Metals Clay). Art Clay is 99.9% pure silver once it's fired.

The picture necklaces you see are made from Art Clay and sterling silver wire. I use the wire to draw my designs for the clay.

Back From Vacation

There is nothing like coming back home from vacation and using your home shower and sleeping in your bed.

My family and I just came back from a trip to an RV resort in Neskowin, Oregon. The highlight of the park were the bunnies! They were everywhere and would come right up to you (in hopes of food). These cute little critters were EVERYWHERE! Babies and all.

In addition to playing at the RV resort and swimming in the pool, we visited the coast, outlet stores, and the Tillamook cheese factory on the way home. We had a great time.

While in the RV, I got my boys to sit for over 2 hours watching Mary Poppins. You'd have to know my boys to know just how amazing that is.

How I Got Started On Etsy

I first learned about Etsy at a local gem and jewelry show. I had gotten many compliments on a pendant I'd made and was asked if I sold my work anywhere specific. While I'd accumulated quite a few pendants and was so flattered by the interest of others, I really hadn't thought about starting up a business.

For one, I have a bit of a self-confidence issue when it comes to my art. I was creating styles I liked, not what I thought others would enjoy. Also, what if I put out money to start a business and no one was interested in purchasing my pieces? I questioned too if the compliments I'd received were just flattery or indeed sincere.

While talking with an opal mine owner (the same mine owner most of my opals came from), 2 other vendors from nearby tables jumped into the conversation about selling my wire wrapped pieces and suggested I check out Etsy. That's what I did and here I am!

I'm getting sales inside and outside my Etsy store. I am really enjoying what I do and meeting others with the same passion to create, as well as chatting with those whom I am honored would invest their money in my carefully crafted jewelry.

Unlike many pieces I've seen in markets, my pieces are made with solid sterling silver, and I don't skimp on my wire. I do my best to keep my pieces clean and ends tucked and trimmed. I mostly use genuine stones. If you shop around I think you'll agree you're paying a great price for your piece.

I'd like to do more wire wrapping of those kinds of things in the future. I'd also like to wrap some ancient coins but not sure I can bring those to others at a reasonable price yet (I'd want to wrap cleaner coins rather than dirt and corroded pieces).

Getting Back in the Swing of Things

My grandma passed on June 30th . While it hurts and I miss her greatly, but it has been nice to spend time with family. Today is the first day I'm back in my old routine.

I'm hoping to begin some new projects soon. I've been thinking of wrapping ancient coins. What do you all think? I'm just waiting for some supplies to come in and I'll get to wrapping once again.

I've been a member of Etsy for less than 3 months but have done quite a bit of shopping! I thought I'd share some of my favorite stores and why I like them so much. Each of these Etsy sellers had great communication, customer service and quality work.

There are 2 handbag stores I just love. One is called JPleasant and can befound by visiting: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5142715 I saw a particular bag store owner Joyce had created for someone and just had to have one too. The cost of this bag was $37 plus shipping. When it arrived I was so surprized at the quality and detail for the price! It was obvious Joyce paid great attention to detail and as a result I anticipate my bag holding up for quite some time. This particular handbag has been a walking ad for her store. It looks so much better in person.

The other handbag store I would like to rave about is UniquelyDifferent and can be found at http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5364163. Julia is the creator of these fun bags and she resides in London, England. While her store name sums up her bags, I should add, many of the fabrics she uses are out of print, therefore making them rare. I just adore the bag I got. The quality is excellent and Julia was more than accomadating when I considered a special request.

I've shared my adoration for art from LaurenAlexander already on my blog but I'd like to brag on her a bit once again. Lauren takes such great care packaging her art for her buyers. Getting art from her feels like Christmas or birthday time. I found her art to be even more vibrant in person.

Fine Silver Flowers

I'm getting ready to start a new project involving my happy little flowers. The only design I currently have listed is for this necklace:

I will be experimenting with some other necklace designs and a ring. These flowers are made using precious metal silver clay (99.9% silver once the binder is burned off through the firing process). The centers of the flowers are detailed with swirly sterling silver wire.

On order, hence the reason for my delay in production, is a fine silver stamp to mark my pieces assuring the wearer the purity of the silver.

There is quite a process to working with precious silver clay. First off, you have to work fast as the material dries out quickly! It can take a lot of time to sand and get textured the way you want the piece. Once complete, each flower is as unique as its wearer. I hope people will find these pieces as much fun to wear as they are to make.

The "Em" In EmBound

I am a super proud mama of 3 children adopted through my state's foster system. Well, I should note, we are in the process of adopting our third child, "Em". We're getting there, but she's ours anyway in our hearts.

In a few weeks she'll be turning one year old. It's hard to believe as one year ago my husband and I felt our family was complete with our two boys. No doubt God had different plans for our lives. Now, truly, we feel we are finished adding to our family. Having three special needs kids, albeit mild special needs, has been challenging and kept me busy.

Having an outlet for me has been so important in retaining my sanity. I have always loved gems and jewelry. Getting to work with, and even sell my pieces has been so much fun. The name "Embound" means so many things to me (describes what I do, devotion to my faith, and where I'm at in my adoption journey) but the photo you see here is just three of the many gifts from the Lord that inspire me and brighten my day (not to mention wears me out-LOL).

Ocean Treasures

This last weekend we took our 3 kids on an RV camping trip to the Central Oregon Coast. If you've never visited the soft silky sand dunes of Florence and Dunes City, Oregon I encourage you to consider vacationing there. No need for the stair master! Your buns will get a great workout hiking the dunes. The prize for reaching the peek of a small dune on Saturday was seeing the powerful majestic Pacific ocean and the treasures it yielded.

The particular beach we visited is one of my favorite. It's quiet (aside from the roar of the waves) and I find time just to walk and talk with God. The beach floor is filled with sanded down broken sea shells. Just what I'd come for. Walking the coast I was flooded with inspiration. Here are some of the pieces I've come up with as a result:

Searching on Etsy for art for my daughter's room, I happened upon the most perfect prints! For those who didn't know, we are in the process of adopting our daughter Emma (the "Em" in EmBound). She is related biologically to one of our boys, also adopted. The particular prints and paintings that caught my eye were of 3 birds in a tree. In my mind's eye they represented my husband, me and our baby girl.

The painting above is entitled "Dream of Life" and it is painted by gifted artist Lauren Alexander, who, like me, also has a heart for special needs kids and foster care adoptions. Lauren was gracious enough to work with me so I could own the original painting. I also purchased some of her prints for my daughter's room.This set of prints is called, "What a Wonderful World."

Adventures in PMC (Precious Metals Clay)

It was actually low temperature, slow dry Art Clay I used. PMC and Art clay consists of particles of pure silver and some enviromentally safe binders that once burn off from firing, leave the artist with 99.9% pur silver. So, prior to diving in, I carefully researched the product. I'd seen some beautiful pieces of jewelry made by artists online and was certain I too could create a unique masterpiece.

So my clay arrived, I had my design all mapped out and I was rearin' to go! The clay was harder than I'd thought it would be so I kneaded it in my hand in hopes of softening it. This may have been my first big mistake because it seemed the clay was becoming drier.

As much as I tried to create my design, the clay cracked and fell apart. I added a bit of water to it but it seemed the material was now pasty with little hard chunks. Frustrated, about all I felt I could do was roll the clay on my mat and create something different. I came up with a cross. Quickly I grabbed my "scratch and dent" irradiated diamonds and pressed them in, careful each one would be secure in the clay.

I then took a hair dryer and dried the clay for about 40 min. on high. From there I filed my cross. It had an amateurish look to it, but it was my salvaged work of art. I let it set out and continue to thoroughly dry until around noon the next day (about 12 hours).

To fire my piece I used my gas stove top and some metal wire netting my husband picked up at the hardware store. I followed instructions I read online. I lit the burner to see where the red from the heat was then placed my pieces there (after first turning off the stove). When my cross and other pieces were "cooking" they eventually became a pinkish-peach in color. I knew this was the time to begin the timer. I made sure each piece was like that at least a few minutes and watched making sure they didn't turn red hot.

When the timer beeped, I placed my pieces in a dish of cool water and heard each make a popping noise from the temperature change. Once cooled I filed away the white surface creating a mat finished pure silver creation. I buffed the parts of some items I wanted shiny. I later wire wrapped them, but my poor cross never did look like I'd hoped. Nonetheless, I like it.

I'm not too discouraged. I read up on PMC and Art Clay a bit more and learned I shouldn't "play" with the clay but work with it right away. I can worry about perfecting edges when I sand the dry piece rather than while it's soft.

What Goes into a Piece

I do my best to keep my prices low. There is a lot that goes into each wire wrapped pendant, so I can really justify what might seem to be higher prices in other people's work. Sure, you can buy a cab in a bezel or prong setting for a bit less money (sometimes), but for the mass produced castings, there isn't always love and character going into the pieces. I thought I'd give you all a literary glimpse of what goes into making my wire wrapped pendants.

Selecting Stones and Supplies: First off, I don't have a lot of money at my disposal on any given day. Because of this, I buy wire as I need it and I'm careful to purchase stones I know I'll use. The wire I work with is typically half-hard (to hold shape) and solid sterling silver. My stones come from trusted vendors and unless otherwise stated, are all natural. I work with rough material and polished stones. I spend literally hours a week searching out affordable yet unique stones to use in my pendants. I like having a story behind my jewelry; something more to say than "thank you" when someone compliments one of my pieces.

Designing: By the time I've purchased a stone, I usually have an idea of what I want to do with it. It's not uncommon for me to start out with one idea and end up with a completely different design. I try to let each piece take on its own personality. Nonetheless, I often take time to sketch out my intended design. I can spend 10 minutes to 30 minutes drawing each item.

Finding Time to Wrap: What many don't know is I am a stay-at-home mom to 3 special needs kids ages 10 mo, 5 1/2 and 7 1/2 whom my husband and I have adopted through our state's foster system. My day often consists of running to and from appointments or preschool. I wouldn't trade my life for anything, as you moms out there know, parenting in general can be exhausting but rewarding! Because of this, I try to keep my work lighthearted and fun. I work on a weekend day and in the evenings while my dear husband takes care of the kids. Being the night owl I am, I can be up late working on pieces as my husband lays snoring away on the couch beside me.

Depending on the pendant, I spend anywhere from an hour to 2 1/2 hours wrapping. The average pendant takes typically just under 2 hours. I'm sure there are some out there who can whip up their pieces in less time but I try to take my time, measuring and utilizing enough materials so my settings are a bit more substantial. This also costs a bit more money to do.

Listing: Between photographing, editing pictures and loading descriptions, I can spend about 20 minutes on each item just on listing.

Advertising: Finding time to promote my items is a real challenge. I try to participate on forums so people will know I exist. I have this blog, and a couple other social network sites I work with keeping people up to date with what I'm doing. I spend at lease a couple hours a week promoting.

Shipping: Most often its a single item being taken to the post office. This obviously takes time and gasoline. My husband has been the one to so graciously drop orders off lately.

To Sum it all Up: So while I may only spend $10 to $25 in actual supplies per piece, between selecting stones, designing, wrapping, listing, promoting and delivering, I can spend an easy average of 4 hours on one piece as I typically produce only about 5 per week.

So what's my time worth? Well thankfully wire wrapping is a relaxing hobby of mine. Currently, most of my pendants are priced about $34-$36. Just because my prices are lower does not mean I skimp on quality. I work to make pieces I personally would be proud to wear. If I'm not satisfied with them, they don't get listed.

Photographing Jewelry

Admittedly, photography is not my strong point. I would much rather be wire wrapping than taking pictures. Since my time on Etsy.com (just over a month)I've browsed many successful stores and noticed quality pictures. I've also shopped jewelry, soaps and handbags.

The photos which tend to sell me on items are ones where the product is modeled in use. For example, there is a model wearing a necklace or purse, or soaps are shown in a soap dish or counter top with a wash rag or something.
So I spent the better part of last night into this morning taking lots of new pictures to display my pendants on my neckline. While I don't have the most flattering neckline, my hope is customers will get a better idea of the size and impact of my peices.

Tying up Loose Ends

With precious metal prices so high today I am consciencious about making the most of my jewelry materials. Since begining my wire wrapped designs I've saved the clippings with the intent of having them recycled.

Wanting to make a cross necklace for myself, and having the idea for one in my head, I began prepping materials for my project. It then dawned on me I had all these pre-cut pieces at my disposal to impliment my design. This was a bit of relief as I realized I was running low on materials this week.

Satisfied with my finished cross, I thought perhaps others may enjoy a similar one as well. So I began working away.

Unlike with many of my other pendants, I am offering a 20" 925 sterling silver box chain with this one.

Hello and welcome to my EmBound blog. Here I plan to share about upcoming projects and promotions. I've spent a good part of the day today setting up social networks so I can share my work with friends, family and hopeful customers.

I'm a stay at home mom and part of my unwinding at the end of the day has been getting comfy on my couch making jewelry. It has become such a hobby, unless I can sell some of my designs, I'm not going to be able to afford to continue. I work mainly with sterling silver and genuine semi-precious stones. I'm still learning new techniques and having so much fun doing so.

Since joining Etsy, where EmBound is stationed, I've got the opportunity to meet other crafty people; many with amazing talent!
